How to book accommodation in Cusco: key dates, tricks and mistakes to avoid

Updated:

Booking accommodation in Cusco looks easy: there are hundreds of options for every budget. But the city has quirks worth knowing before you hit the book button: seasons when everything fills up, steep streets you can't see on a map, cold nights, flights arriving at dawn and tours leaving at four in the morning. This guide gathers the practical tips that will save you surprises and help you choose well.

Start here: Cusco tips · things to do in Cusco

When to book

  • High season (May to September): book several weeks or months ahead, especially if you want specific hotels or family rooms.
  • Rainy season (December to March): more availability and often better prices, except at Christmas, New Year and Easter.
  • Book the limiting items first: Machu Picchu tickets and Inca Trail permits sell out before hotels do. Secure them, then lock in accommodation.

Dates that fill up

  • Inti Raymi (24 June) and the days before: the city welcomes thousands of visitors.
  • Corpus Christi, which changes date each year, between May and June.
  • Fiestas Patrias (28–29 July): many Peruvians travel.
  • Easter, Christmas and New Year.

On these dates, book as early as possible and check cancellation conditions carefully.

Flexible cancellation

Flights to Cusco can be delayed or cancelled due to weather, and plans change. Whenever you can, choose rates with free cancellation until a few days before. The price difference is usually worth the peace of mind.

Check the real location

  • Look up the address on the map and work out the walking distance to the Plaza de Armas.
  • Check the slope: a place "5 minutes from the centre" may be at the top of a steep staircase.
  • Check whether taxis can reach the door.
  • Make sure the place is in Cusco and not the Sacred Valley, or vice versa: some listings use "Cusco" for the whole region.

Early arrivals and pre-dawn departures

  • If you arrive on an early flight, ask about early check-in or book the previous night so the room is ready and you can rest.
  • If you have pre-dawn tours, confirm there's 24-hour reception and a packed breakfast.
  • Ask whether they store luggage while you go to Machu Picchu or on a trek.

Comfort details that matter

  • Heating or a heater in the room.
  • Hot water with good pressure.
  • An inside room if you're a light sleeper: some central streets have bar noise at night.
  • Oxygen available if you're worried about the altitude.

Taxes and payment

  • Non-resident foreign tourists may be exempt from IGV at registered hotels by showing their passport and proof of entry. Confirm whether the published price includes it.
  • Some places add a surcharge for card payments. Ask first.
  • Carry some cash in soles for the unexpected.

Book direct or through a platform?

Booking platforms let you compare prices, read reviews and manage cancellations in one place, very handy when combining Cusco, the Sacred Valley and Aguas Calientes. Booking directly with the accommodation sometimes gets you small extras, like a transfer or an early breakfast, but cancellation terms may be less flexible. Compare both and always keep written confirmation.

If you're staying in several bases

Many itineraries combine nights in Cusco, the Sacred Valley and Aguas Calientes. Book the Aguas Calientes night first, since it depends on your Machu Picchu entry and train times, and arrange the rest around it. Ask each place whether you can leave part of your luggage so you can travel light.

How to read reviews

Focus on recent reviews and look for keywords such as "cold", "noise", "stairs", "hot water" or "breakfast". A high score with repeated complaints about cold or noise says a lot. Other guests' photos are usually more accurate than official ones.

Avoid scams

  • Book through recognised platforms or directly with the accommodation.
  • Be wary of listings priced far below the rest or asking for bank transfers outside the platform.
  • At the airport, don't accept accommodation offers from strangers.

Before you go

Airport transfer

Book a private Welcome Pickups transfer from Cusco airport to your hotel before you land, with your driver waiting in arrivals. Check the price and cancellation terms when booking.
