Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca, also called the Mountain of Seven Colors or Montaña de 7 Colores) is one of Peru's most photographed day trips: red, ochre, green and purple striped slopes at about 5,036 m, with snow-capped Ausangate behind. It is also one of the toughest because of the altitude. This guide covers how to get there from Cusco, what it costs (approximate prices), the best time to go, acclimatization, and alternatives such as Palccoyo.

What Rainbow Mountain is and where it is
Vinicunca lies in Quispicanchi province (Cusco region), between the districts of Pitumarca and Cusipata, about 100 km southeast of Cusco: roughly 3 hours by road to the trailhead. The main viewpoint sits at about 5,036 m above sea level, one of the highest points most visitors will ever reach on foot.
The stripes come from layers of mineral-rich sediments (iron oxides, for example) exposed by erosion. The mountain became popular around 2015–2016; receding snow cover is often cited as what revealed the colors. From the top you can see Ausangate (6,384 m), the highest sacred peak in the region.
- Viewpoint altitude: about 5,036 m.
- Distance from Cusco: about 100 km, roughly 3 h each way.
- Hike: about 2–3 km uphill depending on the route.
- Difficulty: moderate to hard, mostly due to altitude.
- Entrance: about S/30 for foreigners (approximate).

How to get to Rainbow Mountain from Cusco
Full-day tour (most common)
Most travelers book a full-day tour. Hotel pickup is usually between 4 and 5 am, the drive takes about 3 hours, and breakfast and lunch are normally included. You are back in Cusco around 5–6 pm.
On your own
Possible but fiddly: a bus from Cusco to Checacupe or Cusipata (on the road to Sicuani), then a shared or private car up a dirt road to the parking area. Departures are few and return transport in the afternoon is hard to find, so for most people a tour is more practical.
Two trailheads: Cusipata and Pitumarca (Kayrawiri)
- Cusipata side (Quesiuno): the classic route, about 3 km uphill, usually 1.5–2 hours.
- Pitumarca side (Kayrawiri): a shorter trail of about 2 km, now used by many tours to cut the hike.
- Community horses are available on some routes, and ATVs cover part of the way on the Pitumarca side.
The hike
The trail is a steady climb with no technical difficulty: the hard part is the thin air above 4,500 m. Expect 1–2 hours up depending on route and pace, and a bit less down. The last stretch to the viewpoint is the steepest and is done on foot.
Tip
Walk at your own pace with short steps and frequent stops. It isn't a race: getting there slowly is still getting there.
How much Rainbow Mountain costs (approximate)
Prices change often and are collected by the local communities; treat these as estimates and confirm before you go.
| Item | Approximate price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Vinicunca entrance | about S/30 foreigners · S/15 Peruvians | Cash, ideally small notes |
| Red Valley | about S/20–30 extra | Paid separately if offered as an add-on |
| Full-day group tour | about US$30–70 | Check whether the entrance is included |
| Horse (uphill) | about S/70–100 | Offered by community members |
Heads up
The Boleto Turístico del Cusco does not cover Vinicunca, and many budget tours exclude the entrance fee. Ask before paying and carry cash in soles.
Best time to visit
The dry season (roughly May to September) usually brings clearer skies and firmer trails, though mornings are very cold and frost is common. In the rainy season (roughly December to March) snow can cover the colors and the trail gets muddy. Weather changes fast at any time of year; starting early also helps you avoid the busiest hours.
Altitude and acclimatization
Heads up
Only do this trip after at least 2–3 days acclimatizing in Cusco or the Sacred Valley. If you have heart or breathing conditions, or are pregnant, talk to a doctor first.
- Spend 2–3 days in Cusco or the Sacred Valley first.
- Drink water, try coca tea and skip alcohol for the first days.
- Walk slowly and eat light the night before.
- Ask your doctor whether acetazolamide or other altitude medication suits you.
- If you get a severe headache, confusion, loss of balance, vomiting or breathlessness at rest, turn around and descend.
What to bring
- Warm layers plus a rain or wind jacket.
- Gloves, hat, sunglasses and high-SPF sunscreen.
- Water and energy snacks.
- Cash in soles for the entrance, horse and toilets.
- Trekking poles and shoes with good grip.
Itinerary options
- Classic full day: pre-dawn departure, hike to the viewpoint, back in Cusco in the afternoon.
- With Red Valley: adds a walk to a valley of reddish earth; more time, effort and an extra fee.
- By ATV: part of the route by quad bike (depending on the trailhead), final stretch on foot.
- Multi-day: the Ausangate trek circles the glacier-capped peak and can pass near Vinicunca; for experienced, well-acclimatized hikers only.
Vinicunca vs Palccoyo vs Pallay Punchu
| Vinicunca | Palccoyo | Pallay Punchu | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Approx. altitude | 5,036 m | about 4,900 m | over 4,700 m |
| From Cusco | about 3 h | about 2.5 h (via Checacupe) | about 3 h (Layo) |
| Hike | 2–3 km, demanding | gentler, about 1 h | short but steep |
| Crowds | many | far fewer | few |
| Approx. entrance | S/30 foreigners | about S/20 (reported, unofficial) | community fee, no official figure |
If altitude or crowds worry you, Palccoyo offers several colored hills with a gentler walk. Vinicunca is the most famous and the highest.

Final tips
- Go on a weekday if you can: usually fewer people.
- Respect the community: stay on the trail and carry your trash out.
- Ask before photographing people or their animals.
- Do it near the end of your trip, once acclimatized.
- Real colors depend on light and weather; snow or clouds mute them.
Rainbow Mountain FAQ
Frequently asked questions
- How much is the Rainbow Mountain entrance fee?
- About S/30 for foreigners and S/15 for Peruvians, in cash. It's an approximate figure that can change, and it isn't included in the Boleto Turístico del Cusco.
- How high is Rainbow Mountain?
- The main viewpoint is at about 5,036 m above sea level; the parking area is above 4,500 m.
- Is the Rainbow Mountain hike hard?
- It isn't technical, but the altitude makes it demanding. The climb takes 1–2 hours depending on the route (Cusipata or Pitumarca) and your pace.
- When is the best time to visit?
- May to September, the dry season, usually has clearer skies. In the rainy season snow can cover the colors.
- Can you visit Rainbow Mountain without a tour?
- Yes, by bus to Checacupe or Cusipata and then by car to the parking area, but transport is scarce and getting back is tricky. For most people a tour is more practical.
- Rainbow Mountain or Palccoyo: which is better?
- Vinicunca is more famous and dramatic but higher and busier. Palccoyo has a gentler walk and far fewer people, a good choice if altitude worries you.
- Can children or older travelers go?

- How long does the trip take?
- A full day: about 12–14 hours from the pre-dawn pickup to the afternoon return to Cusco.
