Palccoyo: the alternative rainbow mountain, easier and quieter than Vinicunca

Updated:

Palccoyo (also spelled Pallcoyo) is the most popular alternative to the famous Vinicunca Rainbow Mountain. Instead of a single mountain, there are several slopes striped in reds, ochres, greens and purples, reached by a short, gentle walk. It gets far fewer visitors, the climb is much easier and the highland scenery — grazing alpacas and snow peaks beyond — is just as spectacular. For many travellers it's the ideal option if they don't want or can't face the tough Vinicunca climb.

What to see at Palccoyo

  • Rainbow mountains: several slopes with coloured bands from soil minerals, visible from different viewpoints along the trail.
  • The stone forest: jagged rock formations on a ridge, with views towards the valley and glaciers.
  • Puna scenery: llamas and alpacas, small communities and, on clear days, the Vilcanota range with Ausangate.

Colours look best in sunshine and after a little rain, which intensifies the tones; with cloud or snow they can look dull.

What the hike is like

  • The trail starts from a high car park at roughly 4,800 m and covers about 3–4 km round trip.
  • It takes 1–2 hours at an easy pace, including viewpoint stops.
  • The elevation gain is small, but the highest point is around 4,900–5,000 m, so you feel every step.
  • The ground is dirt and stone; it can be slippery with snow or mud.

Extreme altitude

Although the walk is easy, you're close to 5,000 m. Do this trip after a few days of acclimatisation and don't go with heart or breathing conditions without medical advice.

Getting there from Cusco

  • On a day tour: the usual option. Departures are very early (around 4:00–5:00 am) and you return in the afternoon. Tours usually include transport, guide, breakfast and lunch.
  • Private transport: a car with driver lets you leave later or stop where you like.
  • Independently by public transport: difficult, as the last stretch to the trailhead has no regular service.

The drive takes roughly 3–4 hours each way. Some tours stop at villages such as Checacupe, with its colonial bridge and bridges of Inca origin.

Palccoyo vs Vinicunca

  • Hike: Palccoyo, 1–2 hours and gentle; Vinicunca, about 3–4 hours round trip with a steep final climb.
  • Crowds: Palccoyo is much quieter; Vinicunca gets thousands of visitors in high season.
  • Scenery: Vinicunca has the iconic single, vividly striped mountain; Palccoyo offers several mountains plus the stone forest.
  • Altitude: both exceed 4,800 m at the top.
  • Who it suits: Palccoyo is ideal for families, healthy older travellers or those with little acclimatisation time; Vinicunca for fit travellers after the classic photo.

Entrance and costs

Local communities charge the entrance, usually a small fee, not part of the Tourist Ticket. On a tour, check whether it's included. Carry cash in soles for the entrance, toilets or a horse if needed. Fees change, so confirm before you go.

Best season

From roughly May to September the dry season brings clear skies and crisp colours, with very cold mornings. In the rainy season snow or mist may cover the colours; still, some days after rain the tones are especially vivid.

What to pack

  • Warm clothing: gloves, hat and jacket; it can be freezing early on.
  • Sunscreen, sunglasses and a cap: radiation at this altitude is intense.
  • Water and energy snacks.
  • Comfortable shoes with good grip.
  • Cash in soles.

A typical tour day

  1. Pre-dawn pick-up from your Cusco accommodation and drive south along the Vilcanota valley.
  2. Breakfast in a village on the way, usually around Checacupe or Combapata.
  3. A winding dirt road up to the Palccoyo car park.
  4. A 1–2 hour walk past the rainbow-mountain viewpoints and the stone forest.
  5. Back to the vehicle, lunch on the way and arrival in Cusco in the afternoon.

With less walking than Vinicunca, the day feels more relaxed, though road time is similar.

Travel respectfully

Palccoyo lies on community land, and the communities manage access. Stay on marked paths, don't walk on the coloured slopes, which erode easily, and carry out your rubbish. Ask before photographing people or their animals.
