Alejandro Velasco Astete International Airport is inside the city of Cusco, a few kilometres from the historic centre. So, unlike in other cities, it's rarely essential to sleep right next to it. Still, there are situations where staying in the airport area, in Wanchaq or on the lower part of Avenida El Sol, saves you time, stress and money. This guide explains when it's worth it, which areas are close by and what to check before booking.

How far is the airport from the centre?
The airport is south-east of the historic centre, in the Wanchaq district. A taxi to the Plaza de Armas usually takes 15 to 30 minutes, depending on traffic. At rush hour, Avenida de la Cultura and Avenida El Sol can get congested, especially in the morning and late afternoon.

When it makes sense to sleep near the airport
- Very early flights: if your flight leaves at dawn, an extra half-hour's sleep makes a difference.
- Late arrivals: if you land late and tired, being in bed within minutes is welcome.
- Short stopovers: if you're only spending one night in Cusco before heading on to Puno, Arequipa or the jungle.
- Reduced mobility or lots of luggage: the flat areas near the airport avoid hills and steps.
- Train to Puno: Wanchaq station is in the same area.
- Cusco to Puno and Lake Titicaca: bus, tourist bus, train or plane

When it's not worth it
If you're spending several days in Cusco, staying by the airport keeps you away from what you came to see: the historic centre, San Blas, museums and restaurants. Since the distance is short, for most travellers it's best to sleep in the centre and book a transfer or taxi with time to spare on the day of the flight.

Areas near the airport
Wanchaq and Avenida de la Cultura
Cusco's modern district, with mid-range hotels, hostels and apartments. Flat streets, supermarkets, Wanchaq market and many local restaurants.
Lower Avenida El Sol
A good middle ground: big hotels, easy car access and a few minutes closer to the centre than Wanchaq. From here you can walk to Qorikancha.
Right around the airport
There are simple places a few minutes' walk from the terminal. They're handy for a transit night, but the area has little tourist interest and some aircraft noise during the day.

Getting to and from the airport
- Booked transfer: the calmest option, especially if you arrive at night or with children. They wait for you with your name at arrivals.
- Official airport taxi: inside the terminal there are authorised taxi desks.
- App taxi: usually picks up outside the arrivals area.
- Taxi from your hotel: ask reception to book a trusted one for your return.

Altitude and your first night
Cusco is at about 3,400 metres. The airport area and Wanchaq are flatter than the centre, but the altitude is practically the same. If you're arriving from the coast, rest the first afternoon, drink water and avoid alcohol. Some hotels offer oxygen or oxygen-enriched rooms, useful if you're sensitive to altitude.

Alternative: head straight to the Sacred Valley
Many travellers go straight to the Sacred Valley, which is lower, as soon as they land, and leave Cusco for the end of the trip, once acclimatised. In that case sleeping by the airport makes no sense; the practical move is to book a direct transfer to the valley.

Tips for flight day
- Allow at least an hour and a half for domestic flights and more for international ones.
- Factor in early-morning and afternoon traffic.
- Book your taxi or transfer the night before.
- Ask for a packed breakfast if you leave before the dining room opens.
- Confirm your flight time: weather-related changes are not unusual in Cusco.
- Keep your passport and boarding pass handy, and pack liquids and sharp objects in your checked bag.
