Popular activities on GetYourGuide

1. Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca)

The most famous day trip from Cusco, and the toughest because of the altitude.

  • Altitude: 5,036 m (often quoted as 5,200 m).
  • Distance: about 100 km south-east of Cusco, ~3 h drive.
  • Hike: ~3 km up from Chillihuani/Llaqto (~4,600 m), about 1 h 45 min according to MINCETUR.
  • Entry: S/30 foreign adults, S/15 Peruvians (MINCETUR, June 2026), cash only.
  • Getting there: public transport isn't practical, so go with a tour. Pick-ups are around 3:00–4:30 am, back around 5–7 pm.
  • Best time: April to October (dry season).

2. Humantay Lake

A turquoise lake beneath Humantay glacier, on the Salkantay route.

  • Altitude: 4,200 m (MINCETUR).
  • Getting there: Cusco–Mollepata 97 km (~2 h), then Mollepata–Soraypampa 25 km (~1 h 10 min); the hike up from Soraypampa (~3,900 m) takes 1–2 h.
  • Entry: officially S/10 for foreigners and S/5 for Peruvians, paid in Mollepata; some operators quote more, so check.
  • Hours: 5:30 am–5 pm.
  • Best time: May to November (dry).
  • Access was temporarily closed at times in 2026; check the current status before booking.

3. Palccoyo

A gentler alternative to Vinicunca, with striped mountains and fewer crowds.

  • Altitude: viewpoint at ~4,900 m (peru.travel).
  • Time: ~3–3.5 h drive from Cusco; a short walk of ~1–1.5 h.
  • Entry: community fee of ~S/20 for foreigners (operators, 2026), cash.
  • Best time: April to October.

4. Sacred Valley

Inca towns and terraces lower than Cusco itself, which makes it a good first trip while you acclimatise.

  • Time: Pisac ~33 km (~1 h); Ollantaytambo ~2 h.
  • Getting there: by colectivo (shared van) or on a tour.
  • Tickets: Pisac, Ollantaytambo, Chinchero and Moray are on Tourist Ticket Circuit III (partial S/70 foreigners, valid 2 days) or the full ticket (S/130, 10 days), per COSITUC 2026.
  • Altitude: Ollantaytambo ~2,790 m, lower than Cusco.

5. Maras & Moray

Moray's circular terraces and the Maras salt pans, often combined with Chinchero.

  • Distance: ~40–50 km north-west, ~1–1.5 h via Chinchero.
  • Altitude: Moray ~3,500 m.
  • Tickets: Moray needs the Tourist Ticket (Circuit III, S/70); the salt pans charge a separate community fee of S/20 foreigners / S/15 nationals, cash, open ~8 am–5 pm.
  • Length: usually a half day, or combined with Chinchero.

6. South Valley

Tipón, Pikillacta and Andahuaylillas: Inca water engineering, a Wari city and a baroque church.

  • Distances: Tipón ~25 km; Pikillacta ~10 km further; Andahuaylillas ~8 km beyond.
  • Getting there: colectivos along the Cusco–Urcos road, or a tour.
  • Tickets: Tipón and Pikillacta are on Tourist Ticket Circuit II (partial S/70 foreigners); Andahuaylillas church is separate (~S/15–20).
  • Length and season: half or full day; good year-round, and lower than the high mountain trips.

7. Waqrapukara

A horn-shaped Inca fortress above the Apurímac canyon, in Acomayo province.

  • Altitude: ~4,100–4,300 m.
  • Time: ~3–4 h drive each way, plus a 3–4 h return hike.
  • Entry: small community fee (~S/10), not on the Tourist Ticket.
  • Best time: dry season, April to October.

8. Machu Picchu in a day

Doable, but a long day: roughly 3:30 am to 10 pm from Cusco.

  • Altitude: 2,430 m, lower than Cusco.
  • Getting there: PeruRail or Inca Rail train via Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes, then the bus (~25 min, US$24 return for foreigners) or a ~1.5 h walk.
  • Entry: S/152 for foreigners on the standard circuits (S/200 with Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain), plus the S/11 SERNANP fee since 1 May 2026.
  • Tickets are sold only at tuboleto.cultura.pe; book ahead.

Acclimatise before the high-altitude trips

Vinicunca, Humantay, Palccoyo and Waqrapukara all go above 4,000 metres. Save them for after two or three days in the city, and start with the Sacred Valley or South Valley, which sit lower.

  • Drink water often and skip alcohol for the first nights.
  • Eat light the evening before and get to bed early: pick-ups are before dawn.
  • Hike at your own pace on the way up; you don't have to keep up with the group.
  • If symptoms get worse, go down: it's the most effective remedy.
