Arequipa, the "White City", is the second most visited city in southern Peru and a natural stop on the classic Lima – Arequipa – Colca Canyon – Puno – Cusco route, or the reverse. Its historic centre of volcanic sillar stone, Santa Catalina monastery, food scene and proximity to Colca Canyon make it a must. From Cusco there are several ways to get there; the best depends on budget, time and whether you want to see Lake Titicaca on the way.

Options at a glance
- Direct overnight bus: the most common and cheapest option. About 9–11 hours.
- Flight: about 1 hour if direct; if there isn't one on your dates, via Lima.
- Via Puno: Cusco – Puno by bus or train (with a day or two at Titicaca), then Puno – Arequipa in about 5–6 hours by bus.
- Luxury train: a multi-day experience with nights on board, for a special trip and a high budget.
Durations are approximate and depend on the road, weather and company.
By overnight bus
This is the usual way to do the trip. Several companies run the route, with departures mostly in the late afternoon or evening from Cusco's bus terminal, arriving in Arequipa in the morning.
- Classes: buses usually have semi-cama and cama (more reclining) seats, sometimes on two decks. The lower deck with cama seats is usually more comfortable and a little pricier.
- Services: many include a blanket, a simple meal, a toilet and sometimes sockets or wifi (which often doesn't work in the mountains).
- Route: the road crosses the high plateau — above 4,000 m in places — before descending to Arequipa at about 2,300 m.
Safety on the road
Choose established, well-known companies, buy at the terminal or on the official website and avoid the cheapest buses from unknown operators. Pick seats with seatbelts and wear them. Keep valuables with you, not in the overhead rack.

By plane
Flying is fastest, especially if you're short on days. Availability of direct Cusco–Arequipa flights varies by season and airline; without a direct flight, the usual connection is via Lima, which adds several hours. Compare prices early, check the included baggage allowance and factor in airport transfers in both cities.

Via Puno and Lake Titicaca
If you have time, the most interesting route goes through Puno:
- Cusco – Puno: about 7 hours by day bus (some with tourist stops at Andahuaylillas, Raqchi and La Raya) or by tourist train.
- One or two days in Puno to visit the Uros floating islands and Taquile or Amantaní.
- Puno – Arequipa: about 5–6 hours by bus, crossing the Salinas y Aguada Blanca National Reserve, where you often see vicuñas.
You can also combine Arequipa with Colca Canyon: two-day tours leave from Arequipa and some finish in Puno, which links the route nicely.

By luxury train
A luxury train links Cusco, Puno and Arequipa on a multi-night journey with cabins, meals and excursions included. It's an experience in itself rather than transport, with set departure dates and high prices. Check the operator's official information for schedules and fares.
Altitude and acclimatisation
Arequipa is much lower than Cusco, so you'll usually feel better on arrival. If you travel the other way (Arequipa to Cusco), Arequipa and Colca are a good way to acclimatise gradually. The overnight bus crosses very high areas: dress warmly, drink water and skip alcohol before the trip.
Practical tips
- Bring layers: the bus can be very cold at night and warm at dawn.
- Keep your passport handy: documents are sometimes checked at road controls.
- Bring snacks and water; stops are few.
- If you get carsick, take something before departure: the road has many bends.
- Book a day or two ahead in high season and on holidays.
- On arrival in Arequipa, use company taxis or apps from the terminal.
